Growing up we all were told tales about our great grandfather who came to the California Gold country to become a traveling country Doctor. Whenever we visited an historic town we’d seek out a museum and inquire about hotel registries from the late 1800’s occasionally lucking out and finding one that we could look at. Fast forward to 2016 when my uncle called me with a question, do I know anything about book publishing? As it turns out, he had a manuscript written by my great grandfather just prior to his death. The manuscript was no great secret, however, no one had thought much about it for many years and my uncle wanted to see that is was published. Well, I decided right there to take this project on and what a fantastic journey it has been. The manuscript describes a fascinating life, full of adventure and learning. It’s given me a much better understanding of the state of medical science at that time. And a very real respect for the hardships my ancestors experienced.
This autobiography is well written and will be enjoyed by anybody that has an interest in California history, Swedish immigration to California, or the state of medical science around the year 1900.

This in an interesting book about the life of an early California immigrant. Reading the book gives one a glimpse of what living in California was like in the early 1800's. This would be especially interesting to anyone who is familiar with Gold Country cities in Amador, Merced, Calaveras and Mariposa counties because he mentions some of the towns and cities in these counties in his narration. He writes of meals and meetings with people in the past that made that slice of life memorable and special. Those sorts of events are not unlike events we occasionally enjoy today; thus a connection of the past with the present can be read in this book. This book is easy reading of pleasant memories. It isn't Tolstoy, just actual memories of an interesting individual.

40 Years in the Wilderness eBook Hjalmar Kylberg David Zempel Maria Zempel Reviews

40 Years in the Wilderness is a charming memoir of a man who travelled the world then settled into a productive life as a country doctor and leading citizen.

The story begins with his rather unlikely route from a Swedish manor to the merchant marine to the study of medicine, first in London then in San Francisco. He then describes his early practice in San Francisco and the cultural adjustments he had to make living in a new country. We get a peek into fin-de-siecle San Francisco, as it was just a few years before the earthquake.

From there, he transitions to a small hamlet in the Sierra Nevada foothills -- the Gold Country. This is at a time when the major booms have long been gone; what mining there is is winding down, notwithstanding the occasional new strike. We see a more settled Gold Country; the people there intending to stay, finding other means of living. And here the author stays, though moving from one town to another occasionally, for 40 years.

I found the descriptions of medical practice fascinating How a doctor, carrying supplies on horseback, can ride 20 miles to treat an injury, and successfully so in an era when many modern medical inventions such as antibiotics were not available. Of course during his 40 years as a doctor (1890's to 1930's) there were many advances, some of which he describes keeping up with, returning to medical school on occasion for new training.

I also found the description of society of that era interesting how the town revolved around fraternal lodges and churches and the foibles of leading citizens. Dr. Kylberg had many friends and associates; his circles took him to some unusual places, such as a term in the state legislature. (A side note though he held political office, he does not mention what party he belonged to. In our day this would be exceedingly rare.)

There are many poignant moments as well. His young first wife dies young. Her parting words were that she wished she could have been a better wife to him.

I very much enjoyed this book.
Very nice book. Recommend to anyone interested in reading about how life was for immigrants coming from Europe to California during the 1800's.
Well done Dave and Maria.
If you have any interest in California history, medicine, or the way people lived as the nineteenth century ended, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Dr. Kylberg is a gifted writer and had a life worth writing about. I highly recommend it!
Having lived in Merced CA for many years, this book interested me. I'm so glad I spent the 99 cents to download it on my - what a bargain! It's a very interesting and compelling story, and most of it takes place in areas familiar to me. Highly recommended, well written and a fast read.
