Sandstorm Megan Derr Books

The creativity of some writers absolutely blows me away and "James Rollins" is at the top of the list. Love the way he weaves historical facts, happenings, places etc. into a novel for today. Have trouble putting the book down and doing things I should be doing, feed the cats, clean, cook etc. I can't wait for each new book to come out. For me as well I've been to some of these "far away" places and seen some of them which adds another dimension for me.

He is always at the top of his game, no missteps for this author.

Sandstorm Megan Derr Books Reviews

I don't know why it took me so long to get into Sandstorm. I've been reading the book on and off for two months or so. Unusual for me - especially with a James Rollins' novel. The book has all the elements of a best seller engaging characters, a unique storyline, exotic settings, adventure, romance, female characters equal in strength to their male counterparts. The author jumps right to the action (as is Rollins' style) with a "lightning storm" inside a wing of the British Museum and the gruesome death of a security guard. Dr. Safia al-Maaz, curator of the Kensington Gallery, is brought in to assess damage to the museum's wing and help solve the mystery. A quandary that not only invites danger but begs it, taking her on a perilous journey through the Arabian desert and reluctantly into the arms of an old love, Omaha Dunn. Here Safia discovers a tribe of wraithlike women, familial ties she never knew existed, and a mystical underground city. For me, the story's pace seemed to drag until about halfway through, then I couldn't read fast enough. There are a lot of characters to keep up with. Some strong, some not so. Names are confusing. Kara and Coral, good; Cassandra, not so good. In the end, the book left me wanting more and in absolute awe of Rollins' ability to draw the reader into his scenes. He paints striking visuals with his words which allowed me to see the beautiful underground city so clearly. I would indeed recommend Sandstorm to any reader who loves the Mummy and Indiana Jones series of movies. To those readers who simply love a good adventure and subtle romance.
I am only a few chapters into this massive paperback but I find it as intriguing as previous books and I have read (and kept jealously in my possession; as I avidly keep the books of my favorite authors. My husband keeps telling me the house is going to collapse from the weight.) I am a tremendous fan of Painter Crowe and enjoy all of his adventures.
"Sandstorm" is an entertaining read, a somewhat-lite adventure story that's parts Indiana Jones (there's even a character that is named Omaha Dunn and teasingly nicknamed Indy), parts Dan Brown-wannabe. Religion, legends, myth and science-fiction elements are all whipped up together to tell the story of a journey in the search of the lost city of Ubar, after a suspicious explosion at a museum that contained Arabian relics. I say it's somewhat-lite because often the reader will be exposed to convoluted scientific explanations or brief, history lessons. However, neither the scientific nor the historical explanations seemed realistic to me, always shrouded in mysticism or fantasy. Simply put, I didn't really buy most of what was written, but it was easy to just casually accept it and continue with the story, after all, the Indiana Jones movies were rife with religious connotations. What I liked best were the numerous action scenes and usage of advanced technology. I also liked one of the main characters, Painter Crowe, a Native American top-notch agent, highly capable in both military and scientific operations. The rest of the cast is just okay, some coming across whiny, or even boring. Omaha Dunn, the adventurer, never really compares to the other main male lead, Painter. The main female lead, Safia, is not really that interesting either, seemingly just forced to go through the motions of the story.

In conclusion, not a book I'd recommend, but if something about the story catches your eye, then it won't be a wasted experience either, at the very least, it would be entertaining enough to warrant the time spent on it.
I totally dislike sand. It’s gritty and grimy. When the wind blows sand all about it gets in your hair, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The only good place for sand is on a beach. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read a book titled “SANDSTORM” with depictions of sand, sand, and more sand being blown all about somewhere in the sandy Middle East.

However, the fact of the matter was I got hooked with bizarre thoughts of a plot involving antimatter—especially since I read a wee bit of antimatter can make a big bang.

James did a good job of telling a compelling story. He didn’t over do the sand and storm parts, but used it rather nicely as a timely part of the plot. His balance of science was just about right. He did a masterful job of blending the here and now of modern day with an ancient time eons ago when Mother Earth was much younger. I especially liked the look behind the scenes provided by his Author’s Notes when he separates fact from fiction.

Enjoy often… John
4.5 STARS!
I really liked this novel. A close friend suggested it and I decided to take a chance. James Rollins combines the best traits of science fiction and fantasy, giving scientific, modern day reasons to rationalize mystical occurrences in the book. I really enjoyed that. Most of all, I loved the characters and their realistic personas. I thoroughly enjoyed Painter Crowe, and hope to see him in future novels by this author. I loved Saffy, and I loved Omaha. I cheered for him to make things right with her. Enjoyed the gritty fight scenes and action immensely.
That's the positive, now here's the negative. While I enjoyed the technological melding of fantasy and science, sometimes I felt as if it flew over my head. That isn't why I dropped a star. I had a real problem with how quickly Painter fell in love and believed the sudden love triangle detracted from the amazing story going on here. Otherwise, this is a fantastic read.
